Front paths take settlement first. The soil under them was never compacted properly, or water runs across them all winter, and after a few seasons one section drops while the next one stays put. That lip between them is the trip hazard.
Steps and stoops fail the same way from underneath. Once the base moves, treads tip backward, risers stop being even, and the whole run starts feeling loose. Resetting the top without fixing the base buys you a season.
We rebuild from the base up: proper depth, compacted lifts, pitch away from the door, and edging that keeps the outside courses from wandering. Winter heave gets addressed at the drainage, not with more mortar.
