Brick in Worcester.
Worcester has a lot of old brick — nineteenth-century homes, mill-era buildings, and brick foundations under wood-framed houses. Older brick is usually softer than people expect, and the original mortar was softer still. Pointing it with a hard modern mix traps water in the brick, and the faces start popping off after a few winters. We match the mortar to the wall, not the other way around.
