Steps, Stoops, and Walkway Masonry in Hampden County

Goodspeed Masonry rebuilds and resets steps, stoops, and walkways across Palmer and the rest of Hampden County. Here's a recent bluestone front stoop we took back down to a solid base.

The problem

On a front stoop in Palmer, MA, the bluestone treads had lifted, and the stone step base underneath had failed. Crumbling mortar and loose stone left the stoop without a solid base.

The approach

We removed the bluestone, rebuilt and repointed the stone base from the footing up, then reset the bluestone treads in fresh mortar with proper pitch.

The materials

The treads here are bluestone — a dense sandstone (often sold as Pennsylvania or Catskill bluestone) that's a classic choice for New England stoops and steps. It's hard, naturally slip-resistant even when wet, and stands up to freeze-thaw and road salt far better than poured concrete. Because the slabs are heavy and can chip at the edges, bluestone has to sit on a solid, properly pitched base and be set in a suitable mortar — on a weak or uneven base the stone will rock or crack no matter how good it is. We reset each tread on the rebuilt base with the right mortar and correct pitch so water sheds off instead of sitting in the joints.

The result

A solid, level, weather-tight stoop.

Common questions

  1. 01

Can loose bluestone just be re-mortared?

Usually not for long. If a tread worked loose because a bit of surface mortar let go, a touch-up can help — but when the stone base underneath has failed, re-mortaring the top only buys a season before the treads shift again. The lasting fix is to rebuild the base and reset the stone.

  2. 02

How long should a bluestone stoop last?

The bluestone itself can last for generations — it's the mortar and the base beneath it that wear out first. Set on a solid, well-drained base with the right mortar, a reset stoop should give you decades before it needs attention again.

  3. 03

What makes bluestone steps come loose in the first place?

Almost always water and freeze-thaw. Water works into failing mortar or an undrained base, freezes and expands over New England winters, and slowly lifts and loosens the treads. Correcting the drainage and rebuilding the base is what stops it from coming back.
